Virginia NAACP Supports Bill #SB1183 the Virginia Access to Justice Act
The NAACP Virginia State Conference (Virginia NAACP) fully endorses Bill #SB1183, the Virginia Access to Justice Act, recognizing the urgent need for equitable legal representation throughout our state. Establishing a public defender office in every judicial circuit is crucial to ensuring all individuals have access to fair and competent legal counsel regardless of economic status.
This legislation addresses the current disparities in public defense services and establishes an appellate defender office dedicated to assisting indigent individuals in appealing their convictions. By raising the fee limitations for court-appointed counsel, we can attract and retain qualified attorneys committed to providing robust representation.
Virginia NAACP President Rev. Cozy Bailey shared the following statement:
“Justice must be accessible to all, not just a privilege for the few. The Virginia Access to Justice Act is a pivotal move toward dismantling the barriers that deny fair representation to our most vulnerable communities.”
Moreover, the requirement for the attorney for the Commonwealth to prosecute specific misdemeanors enhances accountability and upholds the principle of justice for all. The expansion of the “victim” definition to include those awarded restitution is a significant advancement, ensuring that victims of crime receive the compensation they rightfully deserve.
The Virginia Access to Justice Act represents a monumental stride toward a more just and equitable legal system. We urge all members of the legislature to support this essential legislation, ensuring that justice is not a privilege but a fundamental right for every Virginian.
