The NAACP released the following statement on the national strike of UAW members at General Motors:
“The NAACP stands united with the nearly 50,000 U.S. autoworkers who are heading into their third day of a nationwide strike against General Motors.
Through the power of unions and collective bargaining, countless African Americans and other marginalized groups have had the opportunity to break economic barriers, join the middle class, and establish financial stability for their families.
As General Motors and the auto industry continue to reach record-setting profit levels, their workers deserve the dignity and respect of fair wages, affordable healthcare, and job security. Civil Rights and Workers Rights have been inseparably linked throughout history, and we must continue to protect the rights of workers in the face of all forms of oppression.”
