Medgar Wiley Evers, the first NAACP Field Director for the State of Mississippi, was struck by an assassin’s bullet in the back on June 12, 1963.

In recognition, the NAACP has established the MedgarWiley Evers Award of Excellence to be presented annually to three NAACP staff members who have provided outstanding service and exhibited sincere dedication and commitment to the Association.

During the Public Mass Meeting of the 110th Annual Convention, the award was presented to Valerie Cooper, Legislative and Electronic Communications Secretary; India Artis, Business Manager, The Crisis;  and Eris Sims, Chief of Staff.
