BALTIMORE (SEPT. 9, 2019)–The NAACP released the following statement on the ban of flavored e-cigarettes in the state of Michigan:

“The NAACP commends Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan for taking a strong stance to protect the health of young Michiganders by banning the sale of flavored e-cigarettes and the misleading advertising of e-cigarettes in general. Given the harmful impact of menthol cigarettes on African Americans of all ages, the NAACP supports efforts to restrict the sale of flavored nicotine products. Legal measures should focus on the manufactures and distributors of these products. As young adults have been exposed to these new products labeled as ‘safe’ and ‘clean,’ they’ve become convinced that vaping won’t lead to addiction or negatively impact their health; sadly, a growing number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations are proving the contrary.

Governor Whitmer’s position will help stem the dangerous upward trend in youth smoking and smoking overall in the US. The NAACP and the Association’s leaders in Michigan thank her for her willingness to put the health concerns of our young people first.”
