BALTIMORE (September 24, 2019) — The NAACP applauded today’s announcement by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to commence a formal impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson made the following statement:

“Today’s decision represents a strong and significant move toward protecting our democracy. In July at the NAACP’s 110th Convention, the NAACP membership unanimously voted to support the impeachment of Donald Trump. The essence of that vote was that Donald Trump’s egregious misconduct in office has betrayed his oath of office and eroded the very foundation of our democracy.

As Congressman John Lewis, the conscience of our nation, stated on the floor of the House of Representatives earlier today, the American people have “the right to know the truth” about the litany of unlawful actions committed by the President. It is time for Congress to exercise fully its responsibilities and obligations afforded under the Constitution and hold Donald Trump fully accountable for his wrongdoing and gross abuse of office. History will be watching.”
