For many, Day 8 in Ghana was bittersweet as it was the last day of the experience for half of the group. Before heading back to Accra, the group stopped to visit the Ashanti Queen Mother, a direct descendant of Nana Yaa Asantewaa.
Yaa Asantewaa is one of Ghana’s most acclaimed heroines. She is known for leading the rebellion against British colonialism and defending the famed Golden Stool of the Ashanti Tribe. The Ashanti are famed for their rich culture, female warriors, and vast historical wealth.
As is customary in Ghanaian tradition, the group had to visit the local chiefs and queen mothers to announce their arrival in the area.
Jamestown to Jamestown travelers were once again met celebratory drumming, and many local merchants eager to sell their goods. Many took part in learning the local dance, including actor and activist, Danny Glover. Before leaving, NAACP President and CEO presented the Queen Mother, and to say “thank you,” the Queen Mother danced for the group.
This was the last taste of Ghanaian culture for many Jamestown to Jamestown travelers, and a bittersweet end to the journey of a lifetime.
