An Open Letter to the University of Virginia Community

To the University of Virginia Community,

The recent resignation of President Jim Ryan—under intense political pressure and in the shadow of federal overreach—is not just a loss for UVA. It is a chilling signal to public institutions across the country that the independence of our higher educational spaces is under siege.

The circumstances surrounding President Ryan’s departure, as reported by The New York Times, raise deep concerns about the weaponization of federal power and the Justice Department’s disturbing encroachment into university governance. This moment is bigger than any one individual. It is about the preservation of academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and the democratic values that the University was founded upon.

We must call this what it is: an affront to democracy. The forced resignation of a university president, coerced by political agendas rather than guided by the needs of the academic community, marks a dangerous precedent. If we do not speak up now, we risk allowing the erosion of the very principles that protect free thought, rigorous debate, and intellectual honesty.

To the students currently on Grounds: I know the days ahead may feel uncertain. You may feel discouraged, frustrated, or powerless, but history tells us that young people have always been at the forefront of transformative change. As the late Julian Bond—civil rights icon, Former NAACP Chairman, and beloved UVA professor—once reminded us “The right to education is the key to everything—the key to freedom, the key to equality, the key to opportunity.”

Do not shrink in the face of intimidation. Let your voice ring louder. Organize, speak truth, hold power accountable, and above all, keep going. You are the moral compass of this institution and this country.

To my fellow alumni: This is not a moment for silence. This is a moment to act. I urge you to write to the UVA Alumni Association and make your voice heard.
